Trolley Extinguishers: 20 kg vs 35 kg vs 50 kg

Trolley extinguishers are specified when a portable unit cannot deliver enough agent or range. The three common sizes — 20 kg, 35 kg and 50 kg — look similar in a catalogue but suit different sites.

Quick comparison

ModelDischarge timeRangeGross weightBest for
20 kg≥ 20 s≥ 6 m≈ 31 kgWorkshops, marinas, small fuel stores
35 kg≥ 25 s≥ 7 m≈ 50 kgPorts, mining, petrochemical plants
50 kg≥ 30 s≥ 8 m≈ 70 kgOil terminals, power plants, heavy industry

20 kg: the mobile workhorse

The 20 kg unit is light enough for one person to move over a concrete floor and compact enough to store in a workshop. It is the right first step up from an 8 kg portable when the risk area is larger but the site is not a major fuel installation.

35 kg: the industrial middle ground

The 35 kg unit is common where a single unit must cover a large fuel load and refilling is infrequent. The extra weight is noticeable on soft ground, so check the wheel type and the path from the storage point to the risk area.

50 kg: maximum capacity

The 50 kg unit delivers the longest discharge and range in the standard range. It is used at oil terminals, power plants and large fuel farms where the operator needs to stand back and apply powder for longer. Confirm that the site has a level route and that staff can handle the trolley safely.

Questions before you choose

  • How far is the storage point from the risk area?
  • Is the ground paved, gravel or uneven?
  • Who will refill or service the unit, and do they have the equipment?
  • Does the local code specify a minimum capacity or rating?

FAQ

Can one person move a 50 kg trolley?

On a level paved surface, yes, but the unit weighs around 70 kg gross. Check the route and provide training; uneven ground makes movement harder.

How often should a trolley extinguisher be serviced?

Follow local rules and the manufacturer schedule. Monthly gauge checks and annual inspection are common; the powder and cylinder may need periodic re-testing or replacement.

Do you supply spare wheels and hoses?

Yes. Wheels, hoses, nozzles and valves are available as spare parts for the service life of the unit.
