Shipping Fire Extinguishers: Packaging, Palletizing and Container Loading
Fire extinguishers are heavy, painted and pressure-containing. A carton that works for a local delivery can fail in a sea container after weeks of humidity and vibration. This guide covers the packing decisions that matter.
Carton design
Use a double-wall corrugated carton sized to the unit with a small clearance. Add an internal divider or moulded insert so the cylinders do not rub against each other. For humid routes, include a moisture-barrier bag or a desiccant sachet.
Palletizing
Stack cartons in a stable pattern and wrap the pallet with stretch film. Do not exceed the pallet height that your forwarder can handle. For trolley units, use a wooden frame or a reinforced carton and secure the wheels so the unit cannot roll.
Container loading
Distribute weight evenly and brace the load so it cannot shift. Leave access to the door end for inspection. If you are loading a mixed container, put the heavier trolley units at the bottom and the portable cartons above.
Humidity and condensation
Sea containers can experience large temperature swings. Condensation on painted steel is a common cause of rust spots. Desiccants, moisture-barrier bags and a dry loading day all help. For very humid destinations, specify a thicker coating or a stainless option.
Documentation
Confirm with your freight forwarder whether the units are classified as dangerous goods for your route. Dry powder extinguishers contain nitrogen under pressure, and the classification depends on the cylinder size and the applicable transport rules. Do not assume; ask for a written confirmation.

FAQ
Are dry powder extinguishers dangerous goods?
The classification depends on the cylinder size and the transport rules for your route. Ask your freight forwarder for a written confirmation before booking.
How do I prevent rust during sea transit?
Use a moisture-barrier bag or desiccant, avoid loading on a rainy day, and specify a phosphated and powder-coated cylinder for humid destinations.
Can you load a mixed container?
Yes. Send the size split and we will prepare a loading plan that keeps the weight balanced and the cartons stable.
