5 Quality Checks Before Importing Fire Extinguishers from China
Most quality problems in a fire extinguisher shipment are visible before the container leaves the factory. These five checks are the ones we recommend to every first-time importer.
1. Verify the agent weight
Weigh a sample from each batch and compare the result with the nominal charge. A unit that is 100–200 g light may still pass a casual inspection but will underperform in a real fire and may fail a local audit. Ask for the weighing record.
2. Leak-test the valve
Pressure-hold the assembled unit and check the valve, gauge port and hose connection for leaks. A slow leak shows up as a gauge needle in the red zone after a few weeks in transit. If the factory does not leak-test every unit, ask for the sampling plan.
3. Inspect the cylinder coating
Look at the weld seam and the base. Blisters, thin spots or exposed steel are signs that the phosphating or coating process was rushed. For humid destinations, this is the defect that generates the most claims.
4. Check the hose and nozzle
Bend the hose and inspect the crimp. A hose that kinks or separates at the fitting will fail in service. Confirm that the nozzle pattern matches the approved model and that the thread is correct.
5. Test the carton
Drop-test a carton from the height your forwarder will use and inspect the unit inside. Cheap cartons crush in a mixed container and leave the extinguisher unprotected. Confirm the carton printing matches your label and barcode requirements.
How to run the checks
Ask for a pre-shipment inspection report with photos and measurements. If you cannot visit the factory, use a third-party inspection service for the first order. The cost is small compared with a rejected container.
Red flags
- No test records, only a catalogue.
- A price far below the market for the same capacity.
- Reluctance to provide a pre-production sample.
- Labels printed without your importer details.
FAQ
Should I use a third-party inspection?
For a first order, yes. A pre-shipment inspection with photos and measurements is a low-cost way to catch defects before the container is loaded.
How much agent weight variation is acceptable?
The tolerance depends on the standard and the nominal charge. Ask the supplier for the weighing record and compare it with the specification; do not accept a vague answer.
What is the most common defect?
In our experience, valve leaks and coating defects on the weld seam are the most common causes of claims, especially for humid destinations.
