EN3 vs GB Standard: What Importers Need to Know Before Ordering
Importers often ask for an "EN3 extinguisher" without checking whether the factory can actually supply a tested EN3 model or only a GB-standard unit with an EN-style label. The difference matters for customs, insurance and local fire approvals.
What each standard covers
EN 3 is the European standard for portable fire extinguishers. It defines performance tests, fire ratings, marking and the minimum information on the label. A genuine EN3 unit is tested by a notified body and carries the corresponding marking.
GB 4351 is the Chinese national standard for portable fire extinguishers. It covers similar performance areas but uses its own test methods, rating rules and marking requirements.
Where the differences show up
- Fire ratings. The A and B rating numbers are derived from different test fires, so a "13A 89B" GB rating is not automatically equivalent to an EN3 rating.
- Threads and valves. EN3 models often use M30 × 1.5, but service equipment in your market may expect a different thread.
- Label content. EN3 requires specific pictograms and text; GB labels follow a different template.
- Test documentation. An EN3 claim should be backed by a test report from a recognised laboratory, not only a factory declaration.
How to specify correctly
Tell the supplier the destination country and the approval route. If your market accepts GB-standard units with a local registration, say so. If it requires EN3, ask for the model's test report and confirm that the label, thread and rating match the report. Do not accept a generic "CE certificate" as proof of EN3 performance; the certificate must cover the specific model.
What we can provide
We manufacture to GB 4351 and can supply the test report and technical data sheet for each model. For markets that require EN3, we will tell you honestly whether the requested model is covered, and what documentation is available, before you pay a deposit. We do not print an EN3 mark on a unit that has not been tested to EN3.
Checklist before ordering
- Confirm the standard required by your fire authority or customs broker.
- Ask for the test report for the exact model and capacity.
- Check that the label language and importer details are correct.
- Confirm the thread and valve type against your service equipment.
- Keep a pre-production sample for your records.
FAQ
Is a GB-standard extinguisher legal in my country?
It depends on your national regulations and the approval route. Check with your fire authority or customs broker before ordering; we can supply the GB test report but cannot confirm local acceptance.
Can you print EN3 on the label?
Only if the model has been tested to EN3 and the report covers it. We will not mark an untested unit.
Do you provide a CE certificate?
We provide the documentation that exists for the specific model. A CE mark is not the same as an EN3 test report, and we will explain the difference before you order.
